Description
A lid, a bowl, and a tray—the three elements united, presenting a tea set imbued with the elegance of the Song Dynasty.
The Sancai gaiwan consists of three parts: the lid, bowl, and tray, symbolizing the harmonious union of "Heaven, Earth, and Humanity." Based on the classic horseshoe shape, the bowl features flowing lines, with a naturally flared rim and a gradually narrowing lower body. Paired with a stable tray, its proportions are balanced yet retain a sense of lightness.
The ware is finished in an antique-style glaze with a calm, understated hue that reveals natural tonal depth under different lighting. The glaze is fine and soft, with a warm luster and a jade-like feel, preserving the steady elegance of ancient vessels while suiting everyday use in modern tea ceremonies.
Incorporating natural agate into the glaze, the ware is tempered in high-temperature kiln fires, giving the surface a richer, more vibrant texture. During firing and use, the glaze naturally develops fine crackle patterns of varying density and direction, creating the natural beauty of "each piece with its own unique pattern."
Traditional prop-firing techniques are used, with small supports holding the ware in the kiln to allow for extensive glazing. The subtle marks left by these supports are natural artisanal imprints formed during the handmade firing process.
The lid opens and closes with ease, making the gaiwan suitable not only for daily tea brewing and appreciation but also as an elegant display piece in a tea setting. The shape, glaze, and crackle patterns complement one another, expressing the understated, tranquil aesthetics of Song Dynasty living in every opening, closing, pouring, and sip.
